CHAPTER 5

BRIGHTON WAS happy. The past few days had been spectacular. He’d spent a lot of his extra time working on a business plan for the farm. If he was going to make this a success, Brighton knew he would have to have detailed plans for what he wanted to put where, the animals they would need, their care, and the buildings that would have to be constructed. He also had to get cost estimates so he could figure out if he had enough money. He sincerely doubted he could do everything he wanted all at once, so he prioritized what seemed most important and what he thought could bring in money from the start.

Tanner was a huge help. While his experience was largely in ranching rather than farming, he had enough practical experience that Brighton hoped he could avoid any pitfalls.

“Wh… when do you hope to open?” Tanner asked as they sat around Brighton’s kitchen table, looking at the plans he’d put together.

“Probably next spring.” Brighton had hoped to open in the fall, but it wasn’t going to happen. As he’d drawn up plans, he’d decided that paths had to be put in, along with a picnic area. He wanted the petting farm to be fully accessible for all children. “It’s going to take time to get permits, build the buildings, and then get the animals settled. It’s also too late in the year to plant the pumpkin patch, but hopefully we can get the areas plowed and prepared this fall so that we can be ready for next year.” He returned to the plan.

Tanner looked it over and pointed to a few things.

Brighton nodded and said, “I figured we could put all the animals in the same area. The existing barn can be reconfigured for the sheep and goats. We’d build a new building for the other livestock and paint it red with white trim, so it looks very kid friendly. The pony ride would go near the new barn, and I thought we could add a rabbit hutch here.” Brighton pointed to an area between the barns. “These will be the bathrooms over here. We can plant this section of the land as the new orchard and use part of the old area for a haunted orchard in the fall. That will also obscure the view of the strip mall. The pumpkin patch would go here, with the corn maze behind it. That would put the maze between us and the condos.” Brighton smiled. “My next step is to get cost estimates for all the buildings and the livestock as well as try to estimate ongoing operational costs.” It was a daunting task.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Tanner asked. “It seems like a lot of work.”

Brighton had thought about that more than once. “I really do. This is the most excited I think I’ve been about something since my accident.” He sighed and sat back in his chair. “I think I’ve just been existing for the past year.
